Borneol is a bicyclic organic compound and a terpene. It is a white colored lump-solid with a sharp camphor-like odor and slightly denser than water and insoluble in water. It is easily oxidized to the ketone (camphor). Borneol can be synthesized by reduction of camphor by the Meerwein–Ponndorf–Verley reduction (a reversible process). Borneol can be found in several species of Heterotheca, Artemisia, Callicarpa, Dipterocarpaceae, Blumea balsamifera and Kaempferia galanga.
Borneol used in medicine, particularly in the manufacture of perfumes and other scent products. Despite the possibility of harmful effects due to exposure or consumption, it is sometimes used, albeit in very small amounts, as a flavoring.
