Gelatin is a clear and tasteless protein used to thicken or solidify food products. It is an animal product and derived from the collagen found in the bones, connective tissue, and skin of pigs, cattle, and other animals. Gelatin is usually used in personal care products, cosmetics, drug capsules, and photography.
Gelatin can be divided into five classes according to producers' goods and product usage: edible gelatin, pharmaceutical gelatin, industrial gelatin, photographic gelatin, hide glue and bone glue.
China’s gelatin industry market size has showed a steady increase from 2009 to 2017. In 2017, it reached about 1,426 million Yuan, which has tripled in the past nine years.
China’s gelatin industry output value also has showed a steady increase from 2011 to 2017, despite of a slight drop in 2010.
China is a major producer and exporter of the gelatin, and the export volume is much higher than the import volume from 2009 to 2017. In 2017, the value of exports and imports were 573 and 91 million Yuan respectively.
Besides, China's gelatin industry market supply and demand has also increased steadily year by year during these years.
Now, the development of China’s gelatin industry is faced with the following problems: 1. foreign-owned enterprise expansion will impact development of the domestic enterprise; 2. domestic enterprises are in small scale and production capacity is weak; 3 product quality is not at the same level.
As to the above situations, our government offers various kinds of support to develop gelatin industry, including consolidating unqualified enterprises, and strengthening research and development of gelatin products. In addition, gelatin is also listed as the key industry by the Chinese government.
