Briefing on hyaluronic acid industry in China2019.10.15

Hyaluronic acid  is an acid mucopolysaccharide. It can be extracted from animal tissues after analysis and treatment, or from the biochemical reactions of bacteria to sugar.

Hyaluronic acid can be used in medical industry, cosmetics and food industry according to the different requirements.

In 2018, the global sales volume of hyaluronic acid raw materials reached 500 tons, including 230 tons for food grade applications, 250 tons for cosmetics and 20 tons for medical use. From 2014 to 2018, the compound annual growth rates of food grade, medical grade and cosmetic grade hyaluronic acid were 29.4%, 22.0% and 18.0% respectively. And it’s expected that in the next five years, it will maintain a compound annual growth rate of 18.1%.

The production of raw materials is relatively concentrated. China is the largest supplier of hyaluronic acid and the top five hyaluronic acid enterprises are all from China. Bloomage Biotech is the number one hyaluronic acid supplier with the market share of 36%, followed by Focuschem Biotech with the market share of 12%, Fufeng Biotech with the market share of 10%, Dongchen Biotech with market share of 8% and AWA Biopharm with the market share of 7%.

The major overseas hyaluronic acid enterprises include Kewpie from Japan and (4%) and Contipro from Czech (4%). The sales market share of other domestic and overseas enterprises is less than 4%, such as China's Topscience, Tiansheng Biological, Galaxy Biopharma, etc., and overseas enterprises, such as Soliance from France, Bioland from South Korea, Evonik from Germany, Shiseido from Japan's, etc., as well as HTL from France and America's Lifecore that only focus on the production of medical-grade hyaluronic acid.

In the past five years, China's sales volume of hyaluronic acid raw materials rose from 189.2MT tons in 2014 to 430 MT in 2018, seeing a compound annual growth rate of 22.8%. However, China's hyaluronic acid raw materials are mainly concentrated in the low value-added cosmetics and food grade, and the pharmaceutical grade raw materials account for only 2.3% of total sales, much lower than the world average of 14.3 %. Therefore the structure needs to be optimized and improved.
