Biostimulants improve the nutritional value of iceberg lettuce

Studies carried out by Tradecorp in various Iceberg lettuce orchards in the region of Murcia confirm that the use of biostimulants and soil activators, such as Actyvium, strongly increase the nutritional values ​​acquired by the crop. The antioxidant activity of the foliar tissues increases by almost three times, and these tissues have a lower nitrate content. This is an added value for final consumers.




This increase in nutrition values ​​occurs thanks to the positive effect that the biostimulant provides to the cultivation soil which helps the plant develop a greater concentration of these substances.


According to Daniel Salgado, the head of marketing of Tradecorp Nutrientes in the South region, "our goal is to develop products that help the plants improve the substances each fruit or vegetable already has. What we want to do is stimulate those substances that the plant already possesses, through complete nutrition. We provide the soil with nutrients that improve the crop's metabolism and that promotes the synthesis of substances that positively influence consumer health. In short, our goal is to provide food that can help improve the consumer's health."


Quality, productivity, and lifespan improvements


The results have also shown that there was an improvement in the Iceberg lettuce crops quality and productivity. The periodical application of Actyvium increases the average weight of the lettuce by 18% and their diameter by 7%.


Researchers also discovered that the plant's roots weigh more and were longer. In the first case, the increase was 19% and in the case of the root it was 31%.


The use of biostimulants has resulted in lettuce that is 18% bigger and with a diameter that is up to 7% larger. The use of biostimulants also allowed the lettuce to have a higher content of pigments, of up to 45% more carotenoids and 25% more chlorophyll A.


The effect of Actyvium on these parameters has resulted in a lower post-harvest-damage rate and, therefore, in a greater use of lettuce pieces.
