Is it really safe not using food additives?

Food additives seem to become ineffable for some people who focus on food safety. Although the expert has made it clear that food additives do no harm to human bodies, some people are still feel worried. The position of food additives is getting awkward with food safety problems reported by parts of the media.

There are some food labeled with so called “additives-free” or “preservatives-free” on the market in order to gain people’s attention, is it really made without any food additives? The expert says that the marketing promotion of “food additives-free” has the suspect of misleading customers, because food additives must be used more or less during the process of food production. In fact, they only change the way of using food additives during the productive process.

Additives perform a variety of useful functions in foods that consumers often take for granted. Some additives can be eliminated if we are willing to grow our own food , harvest and grind it, spend many hours cooking and canning, or accept increased risks of food spoilage. But most consumers today rely on the many technological, aesthetic and convenient benefits that additives provide.

  • To Maintain or Improve Safety and Freshness

Non-additives food is more likely to go bad. It produces bacteria during the period of preservation which can cause severe illness by the mouth.Food additives such as preservatives and antioxidants can effectively curb the breeding of bacteria and prevent fats and oils from becoming rancid or developing an off-flavor.

  • To Improve or Maintain Nutritional Value

Food additives can enhance the nutritional quality of a food. Vitamins and minerals (and fiber) are added to many foods to make up for those lacking in a person's diet or lost in processing.

  • Improve Taste, Texture and Appearance

Spices, natural and artificial flavors, and sweeteners are added to enhance the taste of food.Food colors maintain or improve appearance emulsifiers, stabilizers and thickeners give foods the texture and consistency consumers expect.

The expert also says, customers do not have to worry about food safety, as any kind of food additives go through a series of strict inspection and animal experiment procedure before they reach the marketplace, plus no food manufacturers want their products to be found with food problems.
