FAQs for biodegradable plastic materials2020.12.08

OKCHEM, together with manufacturers of biodegradable plastic materials including PLA, PBS, PBAT, provides global distributor or agent opportunities. Get more information, please check here.

1. What are the main applications for biodegradable plastics materials?

Packing remains the largest field of application for biodegradable plastics. The biodegradable plastics can be processed into a vast array of products using conventional plastics processing technologies and can be found in the following market segments such as Food-services, Agriculture/horticulture, Consumer electronics, Automotive, Consumer goods and household appliances.

2. Are all bio-based plastics biodegradable?

No. Some bio-based plastics are not biodegradable, such as bio-based polyethylene (bio-PE), polypropylene (bio-PP), polyethylene terephthalate (bio-PET), and bio-based technical performance polymers, such as numerous polyamides (PA) or polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT).

3. Are all fossil-based plastics non-biodegradable?

No. Some fossil-based plastics are also bio-degradable, such as PBAT and PCL. PBAT is the most mature fossil-based degradable plastics and the most direct and convenient alternative of degradable plastics. At present, the technology of degradable plastics such as PBAT has been relatively mature and the production capacity has been gradually expanded.

4. What are the main conventional plastics materials?

PE, PP and PET and they are fossil-based and are non-biodegradable.

5. What are the main biodegradable plastics materials?

PLA, PBAT, PBS
