New Chemical Materials in World Cup Ball


The 21st World Cup has been heating up since it kicked off on June 14. Billions of fans are watching the performance of their teams and their favorite players. However, have you noticed any difference of the football?

Last year, at the press conference of the Telstar18, several legends like Zinedine Zidane, Alessandro del Piero, Xabi Alonso, Kaka, Lionel Messi and Lucas Podlski attended the event and try-out this ball early. Messi said that he likes very much the design and color of this football, and he could hardly wait to use it on the football field.

The official ball “Telstar18” continues the series of the World Cup Balls adidas has produced since 1970 World Cup in Mexico, with 32 black and white panels. But this time Telstar 18 uses something different in it: the latest development of the polyurethane technology for textile coatings.

According to Covestro, supplier of the advanced materials for adidas soccer balls, polyurethane has the advantages of excellent water resistance, high flexibility and elastic resilience, thus it can bring the Telstar18 great controllability, outstanding flight performance and brilliant waterproof quality.

The Telstar18 skin is composed of three different layers: the innermost layer of the ball skin is an adhesive coating that bonds the textile substrate to the layers above;  the intermediate one is the polyurethane foam layer (about 1mm thick) with high elasticity that can ensure the ball return to the spherical shape after being deformed,  and the outer skin contains two layers of polyurethane with outstanding resistance to external influences, and high elasticity.

The new Impranil® layers and Dispercoll® adhesives used in Telstar 18 has made it the most advanced World Cup Match Ball to date.
