On February 1, 2021 Hengli Petrochemical Co., Ltd. signed a contract for the project of producing 300kt PBS biodegradable plastics annually. So far, the annual production capacity of Hengli Petrochemical PBS biodegradable new material project will reach 933 kt.
In just 10 days, Hengli Petrochemical has successively signed two major PBS biodegradable plastics projects with an annual output of 600kt and 300kt, both of which adopt the process technology and formula independently developed by Hengli, which will greatly alleviate the supply and demand gap of domestic PBS biodegradable plastics.

China’s Kanghui Petrochemical kicked off its production of 33 kt/a PBAT/PBS on December 25
In 2021, with the upgrading of "plastic restriction order" to "plastic prohibition order", China continues to upgrade plastic pollution control measures and efforts, and non degradable plastic bags, disposable plastic tableware and other products gradually withdraw, followed by the rapid growth of degradable plastic market demand. It is reported that at present, the supply of degradable plastic raw materials is relatively tight, and the price is rising. Even if the price rises sharply, the raw materials of degradable plastic products, including degradable plastic bags, are hard to find, and the price rises rapidly.
Hengli Petrochemical actively responded to the national policy and arranged the new material project of degradable polyester ahead of schedule. In August 2019, Kanghui petrochemical, a subsidiary of Hengli petrochemical, began to cooperate with Dalian University of technology to independently develop the production formula of "PBS biodegradable polyester new material".
PBS is a new generation of biodegradable materials, which can be prepared by petroleum or biological fermentation. PBS has excellent degradability, good biocompatibility and heat resistance, and its processability is the best among the degradable plastics at present. It can be processed almost on the existing general plastic processing equipment. At the same time, a large number of cheap fillers such as calcium carbonate and starch can be blended with PBS to reduce the cost. It is widely used in many fields, such as food packaging materials, foam packaging materials, daily use bottles, agricultural film, pesticide and fertilizer slow-release materials.
It is reported that under composting conditions, the biodegradable plastic bags produced by Hengli Petrochemical's PBS products can be decomposed into carbon dioxide and water by microorganisms. At the same time, organic fertilizer can be produced instead of toxic gas. In addition to composting conditions, most of the biodegradable plastics can be degraded in soil, sea water and other natural environments under appropriate temperature and humidity conditions, and finally be completely decomposed into environmentally friendly substances by microorganisms. Compared with traditional plastics, it has many advantages, such as recyclability, easy recovery, non-toxic and harmless, high safety and so on.
At present, Kanghui Petrochemical's PBS biodegradable polyester new material project has been put into production, without any toxic and harmful substances added in the production process, which is more suitable for food grade applications. Its products have been widely used in supermarket, catering and other terminal fields, mainly used for making shopping bags, tableware and straws, replacing traditional plastic products. With the advantages of excellent performance and capacity scale, the product has high market recognition and strong profitability, and has achieved full production and full sales at this stage.
Hengli Petrochemical's rapid layout in the field of degradable plastics will enable the company to further enjoy the market dividend brought by the policy. In addition, Hengli Petrochemical is the first private enterprise in China to realize the complete industrial chain operation and development of "crude oil aromatics, ethylene terephthalic acid (PTA), ethylene glycol polyester (PET) - Civil and industrial silk, engineering plastics and film". It can provide upstream PTA raw materials for PBS biodegradable new materials, further expand the operation capacity of the whole industrial chain, and reduce the cost Production costs, better play to the scale effect, with stronger comprehensive competitiveness of products to quickly expand the larger market.
