Plastic is commonly used in our daily life due to its convenience and lower cost. However, it is difficult to degrade and may cause severe pollutions to the earth. Now thanks to professor Yu Long, the director of Sino-Singapore International Joint Research Institute, plastic has became a new edible material. He is recognized as the “starchman” in the industry, because he has been working on various polymeric materials from renewable resources and has successfully made the starch-based plastics.
In his early research, Prof. Yu has successfully developed and commercialized many starch-based products, including the pure starch-based biodegradable plastic packaging materials and the medicine capsules. And in recent years, he has developed pure starch-based biodegradable cushion packaging materials for the express delivery(foam).
Along with the development of the Chinese express delivery industry, cushion packaging material is widely used in the delivery process. However, petroleum-based plastic foam can cause great harm to the environment.
The pure starch-based, biodegradable and environmental-friendly cushion packaging products produced by the special technology and processing equipment developed by Prof. Yu can not only greatly reduce the transportation and storage costs, but also be used as the animal feed or children’s toys, due to the safe starch materials.
