If the room has already been covered with other paint and you are just tired of the existing dull color paint and want to give it a fresh looking, then you may use clear glitter paint as the transparent topcoat over the top of the existing paint or wall covers to create sparkle finishes to the walls. However, if it is a blank wall, then three liquid coatings shall be applied: the primer coat, intermediate coat and the finishing coat. The glitters will be blended in the finishing coat to create the glittering paint.
There are plenty of choices on the market and you need to figure out the most suitable kind. Applied as the topcoat, the glitter paint for walls shall be durable, long lasting and moisture resistant.
However, to achieve the best decorative effects, the formulation of the finishing glitter paint for walls shall be based on the following proportions by weight: synthetic emulsions (50 to 75), dispersant (0.4 to 1), super absorbent polymers (1.0 to 5.0), coalescing agents (2.0 to 3.5), thickening agent (1 to 2), biocide mildewcide (0.1 to 1.0), anion additive ( 0.1 to 0.5), antifoaming agent (0.1 to 0.3), glitter powder (20 to 45), and water (10 to 20).
And the raw materials of the synthetic emulsions, the largest component in the above formulation, shall be one of the following: pure acrylic emulsion, vinyl acetate-acrylate copolymer emulsion, tert-acetic styrene-acrylic emulsion or styrene acrylate copolymer emulsion, ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer emulsion, polyvinyl acetate emulsion, silicone acrylate emulsion and core-shell structure emulsion. Among them, the pure acrylic emulsion is the most widely used one with high gloss, low odor, and super weather resistance.
When the paint is ready, you can start the application. It is very simple to use the glitter paint and you can even do it all by yourself. Application procedures for the glitter paint are very easy:
- Before the application, the wall surface shall be properly prepared.
- Clean the wall thoroughly and repair or remove any imperfections.
- Paint the primer and intermediate coat with a roller (if it is a blank wall)
- Then apply the finishing glitter paint with a soft brush. (Roller is not recommended for the finishing coat for it may create uneven finishes and leave roller lines all the walls.)
