Calcium folinate is a white to yellowish crystalline or amorphous powder, which is odourless, and dissolved in water but insoluble in ethanol or ether. Calcium folinate is always used to counteract therapeutic and toxic effects of folic acid antagonists, enhance therapeutic and toxic effects of fluoropyrimidines used in cancer therapy and sometimes used as supplements folic acid in folic acid deficiency.

Functions of calcium folinate

Calcium folinate can be used in either tablets or injection, which is applicable in the following indications:

1)    Colorectal cancer and gastric cancer 

Calcium folinate can combine with uracil to improve the efficacy of fluorouracil, which is often used in the treatment of colorectal cancer and gastric cancer.

2)    To reduce toxicity and counteract effects of impaired methotrexate elimination or inadvertent overdose of folic acid antagonist

As an antidote to folate antagonists such as methotrexate, pyrimidine or trimethoprim, calcium folinate is often used to prevent severe toxic effects caused by overdose of methotrexate.

3)    Megaloblastic anemia secondary to folic acid deficiency

When oral folic acid is not effective, it is also used for oral diarrhea, malnutrition, macrocytic anemia during pregnancy or infancy, but not for vitamin B12 deficiency anemia.

Precautions of using calcium folinate

Calcium folinate shall be used cautiously in children, pregnant or breatfeeding patients, patients with anemia (when vitamin B12 deficiency has been ruled our) or patients receiving 5-FU concomitantly. Use the product as prescribed.
