Car paint is used on automobiles for both protection and decoration purposes. Due to the environmental issue that the lacquer paint which may pollute the atmosphere due to evaporation, now the water-based acrylic polyurethane enamel paint is the widely used car paint.
What are the components of the car paint?
The car paints are
usually made up by resins, pigments, coating additives, curing agent, solvents,
etc.
Resins in the
car paints are used to enrich the gloss, hardness, and adhesion to the film
coating. Pigments can provide specific color to the car paint and some times it
can be used as filler or rust prevention. Coating additives can give special
chemical properties to the coatings. Curing agents are the components that
cross-link in a two-component coating. Solvents are used to dissolve the resins
and dilutes can help reach the specific viscosity.
What kinds of car paints are commonly seen?
Car paints can
usually be divided into three categories according to the various ingredients
added to it, namely, the solid car paint, the metallic car paint and the pearl
car paint. The solid car paint is the most common type made of resin, pigment,
and other additives but has no sparkle effects. While the metallic car paint added
with aluminium powder and the pearl car paint added with mica powder can create
a sparkling effect.
How to paint the automobiles with the car paint?
Car paint is usually
applied in several layers, with a total thickness of around 100 µm(0.1mm).
Paint application requires preparation and primer steps to ensure proper
application. A basecoat is applied after the primer paint is applied. Following
this, a clearcoat of paint may be applied that forms a glossy and transparent
coating. The clearcoat layer must be able to withstand UV light.
The preparation
of the galvanized metal surfaces is very important. Improper pretreatment may
lead to failure to the finish system of the car paint. A phosphate coat is
usually used to assure the corrosion effects and optimum paint adhesion.
After that, the
primer is the first coat to be applied. The primer can help create smoother
surface, anti-corrosion and adhesion of car paints.
Then the base
coat is applied after the primer. It is usually the one referred to as the
paint. After that the clearcoat will be sprayed on top of a colored basecoat. It
is a transparent coating that forms the final interface, so it must be durable
enough to resist abrasion and stable enough to withstand UV light.
