Additives are the special components of paint. They are usually used in small quantities in paints to add extra characteristics and qualities, for example, they can help improve the appearance, durability and flow of paints. Besides, paint additives can also improve the production and storage, and reduce the resistance to paint flow.  

Paint additives can be divided into water-based, solvent based, powdered and solventless paint additives according to the type. Water-based and solvent based paint additives account for a large proportion with the share of 45% and 41% respectively. Besides, with the increasing demand for paint in building, automotive and electronic field, powder paint additives will be expected to be the fastest-growing additives.

Paint additives, as the special components of paint, are closely related to the development of the paint industry. From 2010 to 2017, paint output has increased steadily. It has reached 20,412,900 tons in 2017, rising by 7.4% from 2016.

The steady growth of paint output has driven the demand for paint additives. Therefore, the demand for paint additives has also experienced a steady increase during these years. In 2017, the demand for paint additives was about 551,000 tons, increasing by 4% from a year earlier.
