Briefing on the ethylene applications and global market distribution
Ethylene is also known as ethene. Ethylene is used in a wide range of industries including:
Chemicals: Ethylene is the starting material for several industrial syntheses. It is used as an intermediate in the chemical industry and for the production of plastics.
Agriculture: Ethylene is also used in agriculture to promote crop growth.
Glass: Ethylene is used in the production of specialty glass for the automotive industry.
Medical: Ethylene is used as an anaesthetic.
Refining: Ethylene is used as refrigerant, especially in LNG liquefaction plants.
Rubber & Plastics: Ethylene is used in the extraction of rubber.
The world ethylene raw materials are composed of naphtha, butane, propane, tail oil and ethane. Naphtha and ethane account for a large proportion with the share of 47% and 35% respectively.
According to the data of Chinese Ethylene Industry Association, America took the first place in ethylene productivity with the production at 37,841,000 tons in 2018, followed by Mainland China and Saudi Arabia, which had productivities of 25,329,000 and 15,855,000 tons respectively.
From the perspective of different regions, Asian-Pacific and North America were the major places that produce the ethylene in 2018, which accounted for 34% and 26% in the global production respectively.
