Differences between water based coatings and solvent based coatings

Differences between water based coatings and solvent based coatings2020.01.13

Coatings are usually divided into solvent based coatings and water based coatings, the biggest difference of which is the different dispersion medium. Solvent based coating is based on organic solvent, while water-based coating is based on water. Obviously, water is easier to obtain, and is more clean and environmental friendly than organic solvent, so more and more people use water-based coating for home decoration.

Main difference between water based coatings and solvent based coatings

1.     Different glossiness of coating film
Due to the dilution of water, the glossiness of water-soluble coating is easy to volatilize, so the glossiness of film-forming is poor; while the glossiness of solvent based coating can achieve the effect of high gloss, mainly because it can control the coating by resin, which can not reverse the coarseness and realize the evaporation of glossiness.

2.     The different color of coating film
The choices for the pigments for water-based coatings is relatively less and not enough for rich colors description; while the choices for the pigments for solvent based coatings are many and are sufficient for rich colors presentation.

3.     The difference of construction viscosity of coating
Water-based coatings are difficult for viscosity due to the nature of water itself, while solvent based coatings are more convenient.

4.     The difference between resin and diluent in coatings
The reason why water-based coatings are called water-based is that they are water-soluble. Water-soluble coatings can be diluted in proportion, while solvent based coatings can only be diluted by organic solvents.

Advantages of Water-based Coatings

In recent years, with the advantages of environmental protection and green industry, water-based coating has become a popular product, which can be seen in many industries such as construction, decoration, furniture, home furnishings, home appliances, automobiles, ships, transportation, light industry, electric power, etc. There is no doubt that waterborne coatings will be the development direction of coatings market in the future.

Due to the favorable economic conditions and environmental protection factors, water based coatings have been widely used and recognized in the world. At present, the water-based formula occupies the main share of the global market, accounting for more than 50% of the total global consumption. Due to the increasing demand of infrastructure, automobile and general industry, the whole water based coating market is expected to grow significantly in the next six years. These coatings are widely favored by industry colleagues because of their 80% moisture content and low VOCs emission.

Synthetic resins, pigments, surfactants and additives are the key raw materials for the manufacture of waterborne coatings. These raw materials are used to manufacture various types of waterborne coatings, and then further applied to various industries, including construction, automobile OEM, metal packaging, protective coatings, automobile repair, industrial wood, ships, woodwork, coils, etc.

Due to the better environmental protection effect, water-based coatings are constantly replacing solvent-based coatings, and the growth rate has been higher than that of the industry. According to the statistics of coatings world, in 2017, the global market size of waterborne coatings was 53.32 billion US dollars, and it is estimated that the compound annual growth rate of water based coatings will reach 5.7% from 2017 to 2025. The growth of construction spending and recovery activities in emerging economies in Latin America and Asia Pacific will greatly promote the development of water based coatings market.

The price of titanium dioxide has been influencing the coating industry

Titanium dioxide plays an important role in the coating industry. Whether for water based coatings or solvent based coatings, titanium dioxide is not only to cover and decorate, but also to improve the physical and chemical properties of the coating, enhance the chemical stability, so as to improve the covering power, achromatic power, corrosion resistance, light resistance and weather resistance, enhance the mechanical strength and adhesion of the film, and prevent cracks, prevent the penetration of UV and moisture, so as to delay the aging and prolong the life of the paint film. At the same time, it can save materials and increase varieties.

The use of titanium dioxide can greatly reduce the amount of pigment used in the whole coating. At the same time, the coating made of titanium dioxide is bright colored, not easy to turn yellow, light resistant, heat-resistant, wear-resistant, weather resistant, alkali resistant, sulfur resistant and acid resistant. It is because of this superior performance that titanium dioxide has become the best white pigment indispensable in the production of coatings. The amount of titanium dioxide accounts for more than 90% of the total amount of pigment used for coating, more than 95% of the total amount of pigment used for coating, and 10% - 25% of the cost of raw materials for coating.

As a raw material, the price of titanium dioxide price has been affecting the "lifeblood" of the coating industry.

Ruichem titanium dioxide RC 708 is a rutile titanium dioxide pigment, produced by sulfate process. It is a multipurpose type, for both interior and exterior, water-based & solvent-based coatings applications.
