Canada Plastics Pact Launches to Tackle Plastics Pollution with Innovative Solutions

Canada Plastics Pact Launches to Tackle Plastics Pollution with Innovative Solutions2021.02.03

On January 27, 2021, the Foundation’s global Plastics Pact network welcomes the Canada Plastics Pact, led by The Natural Step Canada.

The Foundation’s Plastics Pact network is a globally aligned response to plastic waste and pollution, that enables vital knowledge sharing and co-ordinated action. Each Plastics Pact brings together businesses, policymakers and NGOs around the world, who through shared ambition, combined expertise and collaboration create regional and national solutions to plastic waste and pollution.

Canada’s relationship to plastic waste fundamentally changed: the Canada Plastics Pact (CPP) launched to end plastic waste and pollution. The Pact brings together key players to collectively work towards ambitious 2025 goals that they could never achieve on their own.

The Canada Plastics Pact brings together more than 40 organisations including businesses from across the Canadian plastics value chain, government institutions and NGOs, all working towards a common vision for a circular economy for plastic. The initiative’s implementation partners include the Government of Canada and businesses such as Kraft Heinz Canada, Nestlé Canada and Walmart Canada, with further organisations invited to join.

Members will work together towards four 2025 joint targets:

1. Define a list of plastic packaging that is to be designated as problematic or unnecessary and take measures to eliminate them

2. Support efforts towards 100% of plastic packaging being designed to be reusable, recyclable or compostable

3. Undertake ambitious actions to ensure that at least 50% of plastic packaging is effectively recycled or composted

4. Ensure an average of at least 30% recycled content across all plastic packaging (by weight)

5. Progress against these targets will be released publicly on an annual basis.

"By setting clear 2025 targets and working together to achieve them, businesses and policymakers in the Canada Plastics Pact have taken an important step on the journey to a circular economy for plastic, in which it never becomes waste or pollution. We are delighted to welcome the Canada Plastics Pact in our growing global network of Pacts, and hope to see many other organisations unite behind the vision of a circular economy for plastic that has already brought together more than 1,000 organisations worldwide through our New Plastics Economy initiative." Sonja Wegge, Plastics Pact Programme Manager, Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

"Joining together through the CPP is a diverse group of leaders from across Canada's plastics value chain. While I am impressed by their genuine commitment to achieving a zero plastic waste economy, it is their willingness to break down barriers between each other to scale truly innovative solutions that I find most inspiring." David Hughes, CEO, The Natural Step Canada
