Brazil's health supervision bureau, Anvisa, has approved changes to food labelling standards that require warning labels and enlarged designs on products high in sugar, sodium and saturated fat.
The move aims to
help consumers prevent and reduce obesity by improving their diet by choosing
healthier products. Obesity affects about 18.9% of Brazil's adult population
and the percentage is on the rise this year to the highest level in 13 years.
Studies have shown that ultra-processed foods (soft drinks, snack foods, frozen
snacks, etc.) are directly related to weight gain.
78% respondents
of a recent survey by Datafolha in Brazil said they would probably or certainly
buy fewer soft drinks or fruit juices if they were warned about too much sugar.
Besides, almost 79% of the visitors of the respondents said that raising the
price of sugary drinks would also lead to lower consumption.
However,
people cannot quit sweet food such as candies, chocolates, ice creams and other
desserts. So, sugar substitutes will be a blessing for these people who love
sweet tastes but want low sugar intake.
A
sugar substitute is often a sweetener which can provide a sweet taste.
There are usually two types of sweeteners, some of them are natural
sugar substitutes (natural sweetener) including sorbitol, stevia, xylitol, and
monk fruit extract which are found in different natural sources, and the other type is the artificial
sweeteners, including sucralose, saccharin, aspartame, etc.
As
food additives, sweeteners are regulated by the health authorities. They often
have little or no calories, so they may be helpful if you want to control the
amount of calories you consume and help with weight loss. Sweeteners are can also
be taken by diabetic patients. They do not raise the blood sugar level, though
some of them may release energy, they can still prevent sudden increase in
blood glucose by being slowly metabolized.
