China’s Kanghui Petrochemical kicked off its production of 33 kt/a PBAT/PBS on December 25

China’s Kanghui Petrochemical kicked off its production of 33 kt/a PBAT/PBS on December 252020.12.29

On December 25, 2020, China’s Yingkou Kanghui Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (Hereinafter Kanghui Petrochemical) successfully finished its first production of qualified PBAT, kicking off the production of its 33 kt/a PBAT/PBS project right before the new year of 2021 when the ban of non-degradable plastics will take place in China. Yingkou Kanghui Petrochemical Co., Ltd is a subsidiary Hengli Petrochemical Co.

This means Kanghui Petrochemical will be among the Top 3 PBAT/PBS manufactures in China, which will greatly alleviate the supply and demand gap of domestic PBS/PBAT biodegradable plastics in China with the total ban policy on plastics approaching.

Currently the top 3 PBAT manufactures in China are:

  • Blue Ridge Tunhe: production capacity of 128 kt/a  (including 8 kt/a PBS)
  • Kingfa: production capacity of 60 kt/a
  • JinHui: production capacity of 30 kt/a (including 10 kt/a modified material)

According to the statistics of the Institute of biodegradable materials, the capacity of PBAT and PBS in China is 300 kt/a at present, and about 400 kt/a will be newly added in 2021. Among them, Sichuan Guang'an will kick off the production of its project of 100 kt/a PBAT in January 2021 and Shandong Ruian will start its production of 60 kt/a PBAT in June 2021.

Biotechnology Co., Ltd. will put into production in January and June 2021 respectively. Zhuhai Wantong 60000 tons is also said to be put into production in February.
