Pakistan plastic industry has been growing at an average rate of 7 – 9% annually. In spite of difficulties in doing business during last couple of years due to instability, security, law & order, political and financial situation, Pakistan’s plastic industry continued growing and creating job opportunities.
Plastic consumption has also been increasing due to rising rate of urbanization, changing life style, more youth population, emergence of big shopping malls and grocery stores, ease of life and awareness, usage of social media and global exposure which helped to increase the consumption of plastic in Pakistan.
Pakistan plastic raw material manufacturing as well as finished plastic products processors promise a great growth potential as they are continuously developing, growing and expanding existing units as well as putting up new lines to cope with the demand of plastic products in Pakistan.
Pakistan has enormous potential for growth as polymer use in Pakistan is still far below than the world level. In an emerging market the demand for growth of plastic is 2 to 2.5 times to GDP growth. Unfortunately, it is not the case in Pakistan. The current consumption of plastic in Pakistan is 6.5kg per capita which is a lot lower than the world average of 38.
The polymers imports in Pakistan has also seen a 12.7% YoY growth in the year of 2017 t0 2018. Polyethylene and polypropylene are the two major polymers imported by Pakistan.

Saudi Arabia, India and Oman are the top three polypropylene suppliers to Pakistan from July 2017 to June 2018, accounting for 58%, 15% and 9% respectively in the country’s PP import.

Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar are the top three HDPE suppliers to Pakistan from July 2017 to June 2018, accounting for 43%, 29% and 15% respectively in the country’s HDPE import.

In terms of PP copolymer, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and UAE are the top three suppliers to Pakistan within the same period mentioned above, accounting for 26%, 25% and 22% respectively of Pakistan’s PP copolymer import.

At present, the major consumption of the plastic is for domestic use. New Government started to facilitate for export of plastic goods and recently duty on plastic raw material has been reduced to 3% from 5%. Pakistan plastic industry has been looking forward and growing to fulfill the demand and requirements of plastic products in Pakistan and is ready to play its positive role in the development of Pakistan economy.
