Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80) approved for new use in Canada2019.10.23

Polysorbate 80, also known as Tween 80, is a common excipient and solubilizing agent used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. It can be used in lotions and medical preparations, such as vitamin oils, vaccines, injection preparations, etc.Besides, there are also food grade polysorbate 80 products.

And in the food industry, polysorbate 80 (E433) is used as a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier derived from polyethoxylated sorbitan and oleic acid. It can be added to the ice cream to make the ice cream smoother and easier to handle and also to increase its resistance to melting.

On Aug.13, 2019, Health Canada's Food Directorate has enabled the use of polysorbate 80 in the manufacture of spray-dried bacterial culture preparations for use in infant formula powders, dried infant cereal products and nutritional supplement powders.

Polysorbate 80 is already permitted for use in Canada as an emulsifying, gelling, stabilizing or thickening agent in a variety of foods.
