Wheat gluten is the main protein of wheat, which is obtained by extracting the gluten from wheat, by washing the wheat with water until the starch contents are completely dissolved leaving behind the gluten.  Wheat gluten can be used in a wide variety of applications including milling, bakery products, meats, pasta, breading, etc. It is also an alternative to soybean-based foods which are sometimes used as meat substitutes.

Wheat gluten first appeared during the 6th century as an ingredient for Chinese noodles. It has historically been popular in the cuisines of China, Japan and other East and Southeast Asian nations.

According to the data from ITC, wheat gluten exported from China has shown an unsteady trend in the past five years. First, it rose to 148,953 MT in 2015 and then plunged to 89,125 MT in 2017. Though the export in 2018 reached 110,925 MT, seeing a 24.5% YoY increase, in showed a decrease in general in the past five years.

The export value of China’s wheat gluten during this period has also shown a similar trend, which peaked at 203,108 thousand USD in 2015 and bottomed at 133,794 thousand USD in 2017. In 2018, the export value had a slight increase and reached 178,452 thousand USD.

In 2018, a total of 1,007,873 tons of wheat gluten (HS 110900 wheat gluten, whether or not dried) have been exported around the world. China is the 5th wheat gluten exporter in the world, accounting for 10.6% in the world’s wheat gluten export value. Belgium is the number one wheat gluten exporter, followed by France and Germany, with the share in the world’s export value of 21.7%, 17.6% and 13.9% respectively.

In 2018, Netherlands is the largest wheat gluten importer from China with the import weight of 26,182 MT, followed by Vietnam, Chile, India, Australia, Thailand, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and South Korea as the top 10 wheat gluten importers from China.
