An antibiotic is a type of antimicrobial substance active against bacteria and is the most important type of antibacterial agent for fighting bacterial infections. Antibiotic medications are widely used in the treatment and prevention of such infections. They may either kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria.



According to data released by the Ministry of Economy of Brazil, Brazil’s import of antibiotics accounts for 0.15% of the total imports in 2018, ranking the 121th of PPE (Principais Produtos Exportados, Main Products Exported) imports in 2018; and it also ranks the 105th in the import of manufactured products in 2018 with the proportion of 0.18%.

According to the above graph, import weight of antibiotics is seeing a downward path in the past five years despite of a weak rebound in 2017 by 3.60% YoY. In 2018, its import weight amounted to 4,791.56 tons, down by -4.90% compared with that of 2017.

After a sharp decline in 2015 by -8.20% YoY, the import value saw a continuous upward path from 2015 to 2018. In 2018, the import value totaled FOB USD 280 million, seeing a 6.60% YoY increase.

From 2014 to 2018, the import price saw a steady upward trend despite of a weak fall in 2017. In 2018, the average import price is USD 58.436 FOB / Kg, up by 12.10% year on year.

In 2018, Brazil’s imports of antibiotics are mainly from China, Italy, India, USA and Mexico. China ranks the first among the top 5 export countries, with the export value to Brazil amounting to FOB USD 122.26 million, up by 1.4% YoY in 2018, and represents 44% in the Brazil’s antibiotics imports, followed closely by Italy and India, accounting for 16% and 12% respectively.
